Caring For Your Leather Jacket

You have just purchased your leather bomber jacket and you love it. You also want it to last for a very long time, and with the proper care, your leather jacket will last for a long time.

How Do I Care For My Leather Jacket?

By following these steps, you can keep your leather jacket in top shape for may years to come:

  • It is recommended that you use a water and stain protector for your leather bomber jacket when you first receive it. These are easily available and are usually colorless and odorless and they will not change the color of your garment once it has dried.
  • Leather is prone to cracking and drying in very dry climates. If you live in a dry climate, be sure to regularly use leather conditioner on your jacket to keep it moisturized.
  • Since leather can be easily ruined when wet, it is advisable to not machine or hand wash your garment.
  • If your jacket gets wet, do not try to speed up the natural drying process by putting in the dryer, placing it in front of a fire place or heater or attempt to blow dry it. Just let it naturally air dry.
  • Do not dry clean your jacket.
  • Abrasives and cleaning fluids may discolor leather and therefore it is not recommended to use these to clean your leather jacket.
  • If you live in a snowy area, remove salt deposits gently with a wet sponge and allow to air dry and if needed, condition with water and stain protector.
  • Be sure to use a sponge to remove fibers or dust from your jacket.
  • When you hang your leather bomber jacket, it is advisable that you use a wide wooden hanger.
  • Leather needs to breathe and it is not advisable to store your leather jacket in a plastic bag. If storage for your garment is needed, it is suggested that you use a breathable garment bag made for the storage of leather coats or leave it in a garment bag with the zipper open.
  • It is advisable not to iron your jacket when it is wrinkled. Wrinkles in the garment should disappear when it is hung on the hanger.
  • To keep the neckline of the coat clean, you may want to wear a scarf with your bomber jacket.
  • If ironing your jacket is absolutely necessary, use the iron dry on the lowest setting and place heavy paper over the area that is to be ironed. To prevent shine of burning, keep the contact with the jacket short and quick with the iron. Do not use steam.
